Student Cell Phone Usage in KEC Schools

Niawenhkó:wa to our parents and community members for the strong support we have received as we continue to address student wellbeing and concerns related to student cell phone and electronic device usage. We have observed significant improvements in reducing cellphone and electronic device usage during the school day, particularly at the high school level.

As a reminder, the KEC Discipline and Suspension Policy (updated in 2016) states that students are not permitted to use cell phones or other personal electronic devices while on school property. This expectation applies throughout the school day, including during classes, breaks, and school events.

Our stance on cell phone use is aligned with the broader mission, vision, and values of the KEC, with a clear focus on student well-being.

• Mission (as related to cell phone use): In lasting partnership with parents and community, we are committed to providing students with well-balanced and superior learning opportunities. Limiting cell phone use helps ensure that students are fully present, engaged, and able to focus on powerful curriculum rooted in Kanien’kehá:ka Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten - language, values and content. By reducing distractions, students can build the pride, independence, and self-sufficiency they need to reach their life goals, while honoring our ancestors and preparing a strong foundation for future generations.

• Vision (as related to cell phone use): Nurtured by family and community, our students deserve to be empowered, proud, and connected—to each other, to learning, and to the natural world. By setting aside cell phones during the school day, students can strengthen real relationships, focus on their holistic well-being, and grow as lifelong learners who are ready to thrive on any path they choose.

As needed, the KEC and individual schools may re-issue or develop specific communications to further clarify procedures and expectations around cellphones and electronic devices. We encourage parents with specific questions or concerns related to cell phones to first reach out directly to their school administration. Please know that the Kahnawà:ke Education Center is available to provide additional support or clarification whenever needed.

We understand that there may be challenges moving forward, however, we remain fully committed to working collaboratively with parents and community members to further develop strategies, systems, and approaches that best support our students’ success, safety, and well-being. Once again, niá:wen for your continued partnership and support.
